A Step Ahead Program
A Step Ahead is a contracted piece of the 21st Century Learning Center Grant for the Plattsburgh City School district’s after school program. Youth participating in A Step Ahead are involved in curriculum and activity based life and study skills, as well as drug, tobacco and alcohol prevention activities. Youth at both schools are actively involved in monthly community service activities which increase awareness of community needs as well as create a feeling of self accomplishment. A Step Ahead also offers participating youth a one to one mentoring program. Studies show that children with mentors are: more likely to stay in school, achieve and aspire to better grades and go on to college. They are also less likely to use drugs and alcohol. The Step Ahead Program also provides mentoring series.

How our program works …
Ours is a school-based program where we interview, screen and match community volunteers with students in Clinton County, NY. They meet for an hour a week at the school, providing support and friendship to the students.
Mentors must commit to meeting with their mentees for one full school year, but may follow the same student through the duration of the child’s school years.
Because ours is a school-based program, mentors are not allowed to meet with the children outside of the school setting.
What do mentors do …
As a mentor, you get to know each other and plan projects of mutual interest together. To date, mentor/mentee activities have included painting, making paper models, creating scrapbooks, reading together, doing homework, making trips to the playground and more.
To be a mentor you must ...
· Submit to fingerprinting, screening, background and reference checks;
· Attend a two-hour orientation and other training sessions throughout the year;
· Meet with mentees at least once a week for an entire year.
