Customs and Border Protection Webinar: Breaking The Cycle of Alcoholism

The Diversity and Inclusion Committee of the Petroleum Center of Excellence and Expertise, Customs and Border Protection (CBP) sponsored a live webinar entitled, “Breaking the Cycle of Alcoholism”. The webinar, held on Thursday, September 22, 2016, was part of the committee’s Family Heritage Month highlighting “People: Our Most Valuable Resource”. The invited speakers for the webinar were Connie Wille, Executive Director of Champlain Valley Family Center (CVFC), a private, non-profit community-based organization dedicated to providing substance abuse treatment, prevention, education and related support programs to promote the well-being and quality of life for the residents of Clinton County, NY. Joining Ms Wille was Jacob Coulombe, Clinic Counselor at CVFC.  The webinar focused on how to help friends and family recognize the warning signs of alcoholism as well as providing tips, guidance and resources available to help those struggling with alcohol abuse in their homes and workplace. Personnel from Customs and Border Protection throughout the nation were present at the presentation via internet link.  A Center supervisor relayed her family’s generational struggle with alcoholism and shared a message of hope by describing her personal triumph over the disease.

Champlain Valley Family Yoga Coming in 2017

Champlain Valley Family Yoga Coming in 2017

Emily Cole has just completed her RYT 200 training as a yoga instructor through Burlington Yoga under the guidance of Candra Prabha. As a current staff member at Champlain Valley Family Center, 20 Ampersand Drive, Plattsburgh, Emily plans on using her training to introduce yoga as a strategy for those in substance use recovery. She is part of the leadership team overseeing a Healthy Neighborhoods matching grant that CVFC has received in the amount of $3500 to fund this effort. Emily summarizes her goal as follows, “Our dream at CVFC is to create Champlain Valley Family Yoga. We envision a safe, healthy, tranquil environment where clients and their loved ones can begin their yoga path to recovery.”

GOVERNOR CUOMO ANNOUNCES NEW ADDICTION TREATMENT FACILITY IN THE NORTH COUNTRY

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today announced a new agreement to bring detoxification and outpatient substance use disorder services to Clinton, Essex and Franklin counties. The collaborative effort by the New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, and the New York State Office of General Services will enable Champlain Valley Family Center, an OASAS-certified treatment provider, to open a facility in Schuyler Falls. The center will provide detox, stabilization/respite and outpatient substance use disorder services and will operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. “This center will expand treatment options in the North Country, helping those battling addiction and saving lives in the process,” Governor Cuomo said. “This is one more step towards building a stronger and healthier New York.”
